Communities Seek Local Control Over Alcohol

Protesters March On Roundhouse Friday

The streets of Santa Fe were flooded with protesters Friday, hoping to draw attention to their battle against booze.

The problems with alcohol in the Gallup, Zuni Pueblo and Navajo Nation communities have been well documented, and several hundred protesters marched on the Roundhouse looking for help.

The group wants to stop the sales of things like fortified wine and malt liquor, saying the products are targeted at problem drinkers.

"We want the chance to decide, you know, how we want the liquor sales to happen in our communities," said Leila Help Tulley of the Navajo Nation.

Because the Navajo Nation is an alcohol-free community, Gallup is often the destination for booze seekers.

"It not only brings havoc to the Navajo Nation and Zuni, but also to Gallup and some of the towns that are surrounding Navajo land," said Joe Shirley Jr. of the Navajo Nation.

The protesters said that because alcohol is everyone's problem, they're hoping for a solution that will benefit everyone.

"We have a problem that we want to address, and I think mayor (Larry A. Delgado) has done an excellent job in that regard," said Navajo Nation vice president Frank Dayish. "He's got the community together, and I think with a united front, we can deal with the situation."

State law does not allow cities to set their own rules on what type of alcohol can be sold, and there will likely not be a forthcoming change in the law until next year.
