Governor Praises Dean During New Hampshire Visit

Gov. Bill Richardson was in New Hampshire on Tuesday, touting New Mexico's accomplishments and raising questions about whether he was sounding a lot like a national politician. On Tuesday morning, he spoke at a political series that is a regular stop for presidential hopefuls -- a politics and eggs breakfast in Bedford, N.H.

Richardson is one of the candidates often mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2008.

During his speech, Richardson outlined New Mexico's record on energy efficiency and improving access to education. He also spoke out on themes with national appeal, such as Social Security.

Richardson said he doesn't have all the answers, but does not believe the system is in crisis.

Richardson on the Democratic Party

Richardson said the Democratic Party must be the party of the states, and said the strongest policy innovation affecting people's lives is happening at the state level.

He said governors are making a difference more than anyone else, and states are laboratories for innovation in fields including economic growth and education.

He cited work in New Mexico to promote energy efficiency and improve access to education.

Although Richardson is seen as a potential Democratic presidential contender, he said he's focused on winning re-election next year.

Richardson on DNC Chair Howard Dean

Richardson said that Howard Dean is doing a good job as head of the Democratic National Committee.

Richardson, chairman of the national Democratic Governors' Association, made the comments after the speech in Bedford.

Richardson said Dean is reaching out to state Democratic parties.

Dean, a former Vermont governor, said recently that Republicans have never made an honest living and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay ought to go back to Houston where he can serve his jail sentence.

Richardson said he wouldn't have made the comments that Dean did, but on the whole he believes Dean is doing a good job.

Top Democrats Joseph Biden and John Edwards have said Dean's rhetorical attacks on Republicans have gone too far.
