N.M. Schools Failing To Meet Progress Requirements

More than half of New Mexico's schools failed to meet basic requirements for student performance and participation under a federally mandated system for rating schools.

School Ratings

The Public Education Department announced Monday that 359 schools -- or 46 percent -- reached the goal of making "adequate yearly progress" under the federal No School Left Behind Act.

There were 428 schools that did not make so-called adequate yearly progress.

The latest school ratings found that fewer New Mexico schools met the basic requirements than in 2004, when two-thirds of schools made the required progress.

Education Secretary Veronica Garcia said that drop was expected because additional grades were tested.

That meant about 125,000 additional students were tested, and they took a new standards-based test.
